At Royalmont Academy, we believe that strong Christian leaders are built not only through academic excellence but also through character formation. For the past two years, we’ve integrated the Boys Town discipline model, a research-based approach that emphasizes life skills, positive behavior, and accountability.
The Boys Town model is a proactive approach to discipline that teaches students critical social skills like problem-solving, staying on task, and handling disappointment. By using praise paired with correction, teachers guide students toward responsible behavior while building positive relationships.
At Royalmont, our teachers actively teach these skills and embed them in daily interactions. For example, if a student struggles to meet expectations, rather than punishing them, we focus on correcting behavior through guidance and teaching, ensuring each student learns from their mistakes.
This approach not only improves classroom behavior but also helps students develop self-management skills that are crucial for their personal and academic growth. It aligns perfectly with our human formation pillar, which emphasizes growth in virtue, empathy, and personal responsibility.
Our use of the Boys Town discipline model also resonates with the teachings of St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian order, who championed the Preventive System of education. St. John Bosco believed in guiding youth through reason, religion, and loving-kindness, focusing on preventing misbehavior by building strong, trusting relationships between educators and students.
Like St. John Bosco, we at Royalmont Academy prioritize a nurturing environment where students feel valued and understood. By emphasizing positive reinforcement and compassionate guidance, we help students develop intrinsic motivation to behave responsibly and ethically, furthering our mission to form strong Christian leaders.
We believe that every child has the potential to become a leader, but leadership requires the ability to face challenges, act responsibly, and lead with faith. By using the Boys Town discipline model, reinforced by the principles of St. John Bosco, we prepare students to embody these qualities, ensuring they leave Royalmont equipped to lead with integrity and compassion.
As we continue to focus on forming strong Christian leaders, we invite our community to watch the upcoming film Heart of a Servant: The Father Flanagan Story. The film, releasing on October 8, highlights the legacy of Fr. Flanagan and his life’s work of fostering faith, love, and justice. Watch the trailer here.
